Alfred Hitchcock is a very hard chap to lampoon mainly because he had such a macbre sense of humor and heightened sense of "reality" within the fabric of his films to begin with. Thus, if anyone could pull off a spoof of the Master, you would think Mel Brooks (Master of Mirth) could do it with ease. Here, with his rather affectionate parody HIGH ANXIETY, he makes a valiant attempt and comes very close to mining comedy gold. Having fun with a number of Hitchcock classics (mainly VERTIGO, THE BIRDS, PSYCHO) Brooks at times sublimely intergrates hilarious set pieces that include a leering head nurse (memorably played to the hilt by Chloris Leachman) Harvery Korman as a closet S&M case, Madeline Kahn as a neurotic lover, and Brooks himself as a psychiatrist who has a unnatural fear of heights. Ingenious camerawork worthy of Hitch himself sneaks its way into the proceedings, most notably an under glass table shot desperately seeking a sightline amidst all the moving china ware!!
